The Indian and the Orange: Civilization Through Citrus at Sherman Institute
Sherman Institute functioned as an employment service, sending native students to work for local white citrus growers. Students worked in crowded, unhealthy conditions for growers who profited greatly from both the removal of Indians from their communities and the program of Indian “civilization” through labor.
